The most-researched way of eating in the world, and one of the easiest to live with.
The Mediterranean diet grows out of how people have traditionally eaten around the Mediterranean Sea. There's no strict rulebook. You just build most meals from plants, use olive oil as your main fat, eat fish and seafood a few times a week, and keep ultra-processed food to a minimum. It's ranked among the best diets for heart health and longevity, year after year.

You shift your plate toward vegetables, fruit, whole grains, beans, nuts, and olive oil, and you lean on fish and poultry for protein with red meat only now and then. The cooking stays simple. Flavor comes from herbs, garlic, lemon, and good olive oil instead of heavy sauces.
People who want a flexible, sustainable way of eating with real evidence behind it. It's a good fit if you're thinking about your heart, your blood pressure, or just staying healthy for the long haul.
Mediterranean is the most-studied way of eating there is, and the evidence is strong, starting with your heart. In a large clinical trial, people at high risk who ate this way lowered their odds of a major cardiovascular event, meaning a heart attack, stroke, or death from heart disease, by about 30 percent. That's a big reason the American Heart Association points people here.
It reaches well past the heart. Eating this way is tied to a lower risk of type 2 diabetes, better cholesterol, lower rates of several cancers, less cognitive decline as you age, and simply living longer with fewer chronic illnesses. If heart health, high cholesterol, or fatty liver is on your mind, this is one of the best-supported ways to eat for it.
One of the best things about it is how little downside there is. It doesn't cut out whole food groups, it's backed by major health organizations, and it's safe for just about everyone. The one thing to keep an eye on is portions, since olive oil and nuts are calorie-dense, but that's a small note against a long list of benefits.
This is one of the least restrictive, most livable ways to eat, and that's a big part of why it works. You're not counting calories, and nothing is fully off-limits. Even red meat and wine fit in once in a while.
