Eating to Prevent Kidney Stones
Lower-oxalate meals, steady calcium, and lots of fluid. That trio helps prevent the most common stones.

Anyone who has passed a stone will do just about anything to avoid a second one. Most kidney stones are calcium-oxalate, and the eating pattern that helps prevent them is a little counterintuitive: you lower high-oxalate foods, but you keep calcium adequate (it binds oxalate in the gut so less reaches your kidneys), drink plenty of fluid, and ease off excess sodium and animal protein. These plans lean lower-oxalate while keeping calcium in the picture.

How it works
You reduce the biggest oxalate sources (spinach, nuts, beets, and a few others), pair meals with a calcium source, cut back on salt and very high animal-protein loads, and above all drink plenty of water through the day.

A dietitian's note
Stone prevention depends on your stone type. This plan targets the common calcium-oxalate kind, and the wrong approach can backfire for other stone types. Confirm your stone chemistry with your provider, and don't cut calcium (a common mistake) without guidance.
Common questions
Should I cut calcium to prevent stones?
Usually no. That's a common myth. Adequate dietary calcium actually helps by binding oxalate in the gut. It's calcium supplements taken away from food that can be riskier, so ask your provider.
What's the single best thing I can do?
Drink more fluid. Staying well-hydrated dilutes your urine and is the most consistently protective habit against stones.
How much fluid is actually enough?
More than most people are drinking. The American Urological Association does not set a number of glasses, it sets an output: enough fluid to produce at least 2.5 liters of urine a day, which for most people means drinking somewhere north of three liters, and more in hot weather or if you sweat through your work or your workouts. Water is the workhorse, and spreading it across the day beats drinking a lot at once. Pale, straw-colored urine is the simplest check that you are keeping up.
Does this mean no more spinach, nuts, or chocolate?
Not forever, and usually not entirely. Oxalate works on a total daily load, so the goal is to stop making the high-oxalate foods your everyday staples, not to ban them from your kitchen. Two things soften the blow. Eating them with a calcium source, cheese with the nuts or yogurt on the side, lets the oxalate bind in your gut instead of traveling to your kidneys. And boiling greens and pouring off the water takes a large share of the oxalate with it, which is why boiled spinach is far gentler than a raw spinach salad.
