Dairy-Free Eating

Creamy, comforting dishes with the dairy swapped out. No milk or cheese required.

Going dairy-free doesn't have to mean giving up the creamy, comforting food you love. The trick is building that richness a different way, with coconut milk, cashews, tahini, avocado, and nutritional yeast in place of milk, cream, and cheese. That's how these recipes work. Not salads that happen to have no dairy, but satisfying dishes made creamy without it: mac and 'cheese', creamy soups, rich curries, smoothies. And getting your calcium without dairy is easy: these recipes lean on leafy greens, tofu, canned fish with bones, almonds, and fortified plant milks. Whether it's a milk allergy, lactose intolerance, or you just feel better without it, every recipe here is dairy-free from the ground up.

How it works

Your plan runs on two tracks. Plenty of it is food that was never made with dairy in the first place, with calcium coming from leafy greens, tofu, canned fish with the bones in, and fortified plant milks. The rest is the food people actually miss, remade: creamy sauces built on cashew and tahini, curries and smoothies on coconut milk, richness from avocado where cream would have gone. Every recipe here is already dairy-free, so the substituting is done before it reaches you and there is nothing to double-check in your own kitchen.

✓ What you'll eat

  • Fortified plant milks (almond, soy, oat) in place of dairy
  • Leafy greens, broccoli, and bok choy for calcium
  • Canned salmon and sardines with the bones
  • Nuts, seeds, and tahini
  • Plenty of vegetables, fruit, whole grains, and quality protein

✕ What you'll limit

  • Milk, cheese, yogurt, butter, cream, and ice cream
  • Hidden dairy in baked goods, sauces, and processed foods (read labels)

Who it's a good fit for

Anyone with a milk allergy or lactose intolerance, and anyone who simply digests better without dairy.

A dietitian's note

If you're cutting dairy for a milk allergy, read labels for whey, casein, and lactose. Those are the words that flag hidden dairy. And if you'd like even more to choose from, many of our other plans are naturally dairy-free too, so feel free to explore them for extra variety.

Common questions

Is dairy-free the same as lactose-free?
Not quite. Lactose-free products (like lactose-free milk) still contain milk protein, so they're off-limits for a true milk allergy. Dairy-free means no milk-derived ingredients at all.
Can I get enough calcium without dairy?
Absolutely. It's very doable. Leafy greens, fortified plant milks, tofu, canned fish with bones, and almonds are all solid calcium sources, and these recipes lean on them. A fortified plant milk with meals makes it effortless.
Which plant milk should I buy?
For anything where you actually taste the milk, in a glass or on cereal or in coffee, soy is the closest match to cow's milk, with somewhere around seven grams of protein a cup against roughly one in almond. Almond, oat, and coconut are lovely in cooking, but they're mostly water and fat, so they don't carry protein the way dairy did. Whichever you pick, read the label for added calcium and vitamin D, since fortification ranges from almost none to as much as milk, and shake the carton, because the added calcium settles at the bottom.
Do I have to cook separate meals for the rest of the family?
No, and it would be a shame to. These recipes are dairy-free from the ground up rather than stripped-down versions of the original, so a cashew-cream pasta or a coconut curry reads as dinner and not as your special plate. The easy approach is one dairy-free meal for everyone with the cheese or butter set on the table for whoever wants it. If the reason you're avoiding dairy is a milk allergy, keep that further apart, with separate utensils and boards, because a trace is enough to matter.
